In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My short film is a fast-paced, romantic comedy. It uses the forms and conventions of this commercial genre as the male and female characters are of different temperaments and they don't get along at first, the film also contains very witty dialogue. However, it challenges the forms and conventions of film distribution of this genre as I want my film to be sponsored by the telecommunications company, Orange and be downloadable through an Orange application on smartphones.

Orange would be encouraging first time filmmakers to use their products to reach an audience. Most first time filmmakers would probably produce films of an alternative genre, but I have chosen a commercial one. What in my film challenges the forms and conventions of real media products is not the content of my film but the way in which I have chosen to distribute it. A film that has used mobile phones as one of the ways of distribution is, "Rage" by Sally Potter, the filmmakers partnered with Babelgum for the films release.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? For my ancillary texts, I chose to make a poster and a magazine review. The context of my film is a promotional exercise by a telecommunications company like Orange. The short film would be distributed as a mobile phone download so I designed the ancillary texts with this in mind. The magazine review has a simple user-friendly format that would work in some of the bite size reviews for a popular film review glossy magazine like Empire, the magazine review is quite conventional and the review is slightly negative, I feel this illustrates the fact that I will have no control over the magazine as opposed to the poster.
I designed the poster as a composite collage of different elements from the film, the idea would be that subscribers to the promotional campaign would receive 9 separate images which they would assemble as a final piece.
I chose to design the poster as a composite collage so that the characters were a mystery to the audience prior to the film release, I feel like that links closely to the film as the characters are a mystery in it.
Orange already run a Wednesday 2 for 1 campaign and the idea is using film as a way to attract younger audiences. I'm also featuring a phone as part of my narrative so the different platforms I am working in should all link up to this central idea.
The review was to take product placement to a new dimension by featuring the film in the product as opposed to featuring the product in the film.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
A few of my schoolmates watched my short film. They found it very funny and thought the mobile phone shots were very effective. However, they didn't like the end scene and thought it would have been a lot better if there was an actual coffee shop scene, in which case there would have been a flirty, witty conversation between the two characters to pull the whole film together. The reason why I chose mobile phone downloads as my distribution method was so that it would reach a wide audience from which I would get feedback.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
During the first stages of my research and planning, I used YouTube to find certain clips from the films I was inspired by, I found it very helpful as I was able to share the clips instantly unto my blog. I used Blogger to document my research, planning and filming process and my evaluation, it was very user friendly and I was able to illustrate my essays using pictures and videos. I used a Sony camcorder and a tripod during the filming process and IMovie during the editing process, IMovie made it very easy for me to use different editing techniques. I used Microsoft Word to design my magazine review and Picasa to design my Poster. In actual fact, the main device used in my research, planning, filming and evaluation process was my BlackBerry. It served as my personal organiser, my phone and instant messaging device which I used to organise the cast, my camera and most importantly it starred in my film. My BlackBerry made the whole process a lot easier and as it is a small, mobile device, I was able to have it with me at all times.

During my planning and evaluation stages, my BlackBerry was the single indispensable device that converged all the functions I needed in the process. As it aided most of the illustrations in the blog as well as allowed me to easily clear the copyright for the music in my film very easily by an email sent from his BlackBerry wireless device.
